Wrapping Up, Moving On!

Link up - it is fun :) Hosted by two great ladies http://hohoruns.blogspot.com/ and http://www.misssippipiddlin.com/ make sure to stop by and read some other great posts.

I posted yesterday about how I took two weeks and backed it down. Three full rest days each week, and I am feeling a lot better. So last week, I pushed it a bit. Maybe going in cycles, two hard weeks, and then a week with three full rest days. Who knows?! Maybe alternate weeks... always adjusting as needed. Getting old, and trying to find the balance that makes my heart happy, and keeps me healthy, is going to be an ongoing battle I guess.

So here's how last week wrapped up...

Monday 4 mile run (38:31) cool day /stretching
Tuesday p.m.20 mile bike ride around the neighborhood
Wednesday a.m.5.5 mile run (56:42)/stretching
Thursday2 mile treadmill run - 90 minutes circuit workout and leg lifts
Friday a.m.10K run 66 min. ~ 3.5 mile walk with run buddy
Saturday a.m.3 mile run (29:00)
Saturday p.m.Cycling 5 miles - 75 min. heavy lifting
Sunday biked 25 miles with hubby

I feel like I went a little crazy, but I do feel good :)
I have not been my usual picture happy self the past few weeks, but I did snap this to explain why I rode the bike Tuesday night.

I am trying to give my shoulders a longer break between lifting sessions. Thursday night was a good work out that didn't leave me quite as sore. I love some free weight work, but machines are more controlled, so I am never as sore.  Hubby and I both felt like we had a great work out so it was a win.

The rolls - not imaginary, they are really there lol  I am now going to embrace them... if you read yesterdays post this will make more sense :)

It was raining for 10K Friday with run buddy...I am not a rain runner, but luckily it stayed pretty light.

I think this may have been our slowest all summer, 66 minutes....once upon a time, I could run a sub 60 10K, maybe by December again?? IDK, maybe never...

Run buddy and I only have one more Friday to do this together, between vacations and the change in our work schedules it has to end. We have run a 10K every Friday, for 10 weeks now, and I think we got slower each week, but I don't mind I am just happy we maintained something outside.
Stretching my calf muscles on the steps, one of my favorite stretches  :)
Saturday was my first morning with the half marathon training team. The run on my chart looks good, but it was my toughest moment all week. I'll post more about it another day.
Saturday afternoon, hubby and I lifted heavy, which also cured my heavy mood from the morning.  He is making a lot progress with how much he can bench, and I was able to push my goal weight up on the Smith machine.  We both woke up sore Sunday lol. We decided we were due a good bike ride. It takes an hour to drive to the trail, but it's worth it:) Highbridge is a great place to ride and one day we will conquer the whole thing, but not when it's 87 degrees.

It was so sunny, I had to stop a few times and flush my eyes, but we still managed 25 miles.
Oh HA-AY, it's much more pleasant with sun on your back

This little gal was funny, very curious, and kept hanging around even as we inched closer

She finally decided we were boring...

Lunch! I love biking because you can stop and eat, can't do that on a run! I know the display looks obnoxious, but we ate a small breakfast and this was actually our lunch/dinner. I have this thing about onion rings.  I usually take a bite or two and suck the onion out.  I don't want to eat too much fried stuff, but just a little  tastes so good :) AND, yes I know, I have posted about how I can't lose weight. This is exactly my problem, I ate fairly conservative all week, I neeed a day like this every so often (like once a week).
This is a testament to the gain my hubby has made in his fitness levels. I can barely keep up with him!! I struggled a little in the heat, but he was fine :)
All and all, I feel good about last week, and I turn 49 today. I am not that excited about birthdays anymore, 49 years, I can't figure out where the time went.

How was your week last week?
Have you ever biked with an eating break?
Have you maintained a good running base this summer or grown yours?

You Look Like a Runner...And Smell Like One Too!

(Wink, wink - just a nod to the ol' humidity! LOL!)

That looks like a wonderful trail to ride on. It's so neat you can stop and eat. I thought I'd be riding more this summer, but I can't seem to find the time AND I need a new front tire. I'm glad to hear you are training for a half and I think you will enjoy the group. Even though you feel your Friday 10k times got slower, I think getting out there and persisting will pay off in the Fall. I hope you enjoy your birthday! Thanks for linking up with us. It is much appreciated!

    1. ha! You nailed the birthday tune :) I swear sometimes I can not scrub enough after a run!
The trail is pretty awesome and it's the closet spot to us where we can spend a few hours and eat. We eat at a different place each time we go. It's 31 miles long and I dying to do the whole thing :) however, not when sweat is burning my eyeballs out! Tidbit: I ran my first half marathon there!
I enjoyed the link up posts :)

  2. I keep saying that I want to get my bike fixed so that I can actually ride it once again. I think that would be a great way to mix up my routine. I love the idea of biking with an eating break. That's awesome that you and your hubby workout together. Happy Birthday!

Eating and biking is good stuff :)
Hubby and I working out together is still a newer thing to us, and one of the very best things ever, I love it!

Hey lady - I WISH I had the shape you have - rolls or not - you look fantastic!!!
I'm a little tired of TRIPLE digit temps

I humbly say thank you, I am just going to have to learn to love the rolls lol
I am with you, I want the triple stuff to calm down!

  4. I've built a good base this summer but now I'll see if I can maintain it with this crazy heat. August has never been my favorite month.

    1. August usually feels long to me and I always want it to feel like Fall in September, but it rarely does lol October is usually when I start to really enjoy an out door run :)

  5. Happy birthday!

Seems we have the same sorts of thoughts swirling through our brains.

I'm actually at a decent weight (even if I'd love to lose another 5 pounds), but the rolls are still there. Probably always will be.

It's sad when you lose a running buddy. :( But I'd be so pleased with your 10k time - that would be race pace for me!

    1. Thank you :) Yep, I relate. At some point I just have to accept where I am, I was working through that process the past few months. I keep doing core strength work though :) Can't hurt, right lol
This is the longest I've ever had someone to run with once a week. I will miss it.
I am happy with our 10K times :) I struggle in heat, so just to do it all summer was progress for me. I can not wrap my brain around cutting 6 or 7 minutes off it again, it seems overwhelming.

  6. Happy Birthday!

Don't you ever rest! I don't see any rest days on that schedule. LOL

I run and eat too. I stop halfway and eat. Is there anything wrong with that? LOL

    1. Thank you Darlene :) My hubby just reminded me I actually working on my 50th year lol
I promise for two weeks I took three full days off lol
I am jealous you can run and eat! My tummy does crazy things when running, I can't eat much at all, sometimes even up to an hour after I run, I can't put solid food in my tummy.

  7. Happy, happy, happy birthday!!! I hope you have a wonderful day!!!

Good lord, 100 degrees on the thermometer!?!? I don't know how anyone can train in that kind of heat. It's just not safe!!!

Way to go on a fantastic week of training!!! Love the picture of the deer and your food looks super delicious!!!

  8. Great workouts this week! That is cool that the machines leave you feeling less sore. You and your hubby are such a cute couple! I know I say this all the time but it reminds me of me and Paul- always doing things together! My favorite part of onion rings is the fried part. I think they should make just fried rings without anything in them. Dip them in ranch. Mmmmm!!!

    1. Thank you Megan :)
Machines feel so different to me, I think it's odd, but it works.
You and Paul were made for each other and you always say he's your favorite person. I feel the same way, my hubby is my favorite person for sure.
Ranch, hmmm, something new to try :)

  9. Happy birthday! Hope you have a fabulous day. Wow! You bike alot. Always a nice incentive though when you know you're stopping to eat. I biked about 12 miles the other day and my but was so sore the next day. Not used to sitting that long. I can't imagine 20 plus miles on a bike. I say that, but I can run 20 plus on feet which should be alot harder.

Yes, running 20 miles on feet is way more challenging! It is still a dream for me lol
I did have a sore tush I started feeling the last few miles. I even wore my padded shorts. I am going to have to work on it because I am determined this winter to bike the whole trail :)

  10. Happy Birthday Karen! Cheers to a fabulous year! Gosh you killed it last week. Approaching that half century mark definitely threw my workouts and my metabolism for a loop. In fact I'm still trying to find a happy balance. I love that you and your hubby workout so much together. I lift with the Caveman usually but haven't been able to now that my long runs have gotten so long.

    1. Thank you Marcia:) I love the cavemen's nickname, makes me smile every time you write it.
There has been a change in the energy stores for sure the past few years. I guess it will always be an adjust as needed kind of thing. I am just much more aware I have to take care of what I have left lol
Your long runs are getting really long right now :) That would zapping me a bit!

  11. Aww a very Happy Birthday to you! Hey it's ok that your 10k's have gotten slower, come fall all this hard work will pay off! Your looking amazing and I did get the rolls comment ;) and so glad your embracing them! I workout with a personal trainer at my gym sometimes we do machines and sometimes free weights and your right the machines are more controlled. I haven't though of that until you said it! Thanks again for linking up with us! :)

I would really enjoy a trainer to make me try new things. Hubby and I have been good though, we watch a lot of youtube and figure things out.
I am hopeful in Fall some speed will return, but even if it doesn't I will be happy as long as I feel good running.

  15. Happy Birthday!!!

Nice training week! No rest day though... was that on purpose? Or did you mess up your schedule, like I did? Ha ha!

Sometimes you just gotta drive to the trail. We have so many good ones out here, it's totally worth getting to them (even though it feels silly to drive your bike somewhere!).

Aww, come on! You can eat a few onion rings! A world without some fried food then and now is a sad one, lol :)

I think it's great you and your run buddy have stuck together all summer. So what if you've slowed down! Isn't it still getting hotter?!

    1. Thank you Kim :) I had rested three days the week before, and although I really needed it, I was excited to have a push it a little week lol
I agree driving to have a peaceful ride is so worth it! I just wish things were built around me more that suited an active lifestyle. The parks near me have very limited paved path - sad.
You are right! I need to enjoy what I like food wise :)
It is still very hot! Last year we were deep into Sept. before the humidity and heat really changed.
