Last week I was cruising along feeling pretty good.  I had to run in the rain, something I don't love, but decided to embrace it, because I wanted to enjoy my break from work as much as possible.
I felt pretty good after my rain runs. There is a definite improvement with my foot. My runs were broken up this week. I would run 4 or 5 miles, walk a bit then run another mile or two. I was just trying to survive the heat, even in the rain it felt awful sticky, but it made my chart a little crazy to follow.

MondayRest!
Tuesday4 mile run (39:31) - 10 min. walk - .50 mile run (5:31) - 10 min. walk - 1.25 mile run (12:00)
Wednesday Cycling warm up (15:00) - 65 min. upper body strength training/stretching - 1 mile treadmill walk
Thursday 5.5 mile run (56:04) - 3 min. walk - 1 mile run (9:48) - 5 min. stretching
Friday 5 mile run (51:25) - 14 min. walk - 1.5 mile run (15:00)
Saturday Rest!
Sunday 2 mile walk outside (37:00) - 65 min. leg and core work - 2. 25 mile walk outside (44:00)
Tuesday - 6 miles
Thursday - 6.5 miles

Christmas day we ran and it was very warm. It was actually harder than the rain runs. It has been extremely sticky, that good 'ol dew point was almost at 70, and we only had a few brief moments of rain so there was little relief from the (75 degrees) heat. I felt fine when I was done and was patting myself on the back for doing it.
Friday - 6.5 miles
About 6 hours later I started to get "sick". Christmas night by 7 p.m. or so, my ganglion cysts in my wrists blew up and I just felt nauseous. Usually I will get the sweats and chills, but this time I was lucky, none of that, just some stiffness in my knees. If you have been following me for any length of time, you already know I have a history of random flare ups after a very humid/hot run. My system and heat do not mix well. It is typical for me to feel fine for hours, then boom, I start feeling funky. The appearance of the symptoms are always very similar, and they usually take a few days to subside, and it just annoying. I can not make any sense about why my cysts get so swollen when I overheat. My left one in particular blew up like a balloon. The lump in the wrist hits the nerves so my hand feels numb and tight. I can not accomplish much when I am like this, it hurts, so I take ibuprofen non-stop and ride it out. It eats up time, the precious time I am off work, but I have no control ¯\_()_/¯
Saturday we decided to go see Daddy's Home, which I loved  and the laughter was a good distraction, since I missed my long run for the week.

Sunday when I woke up, my right wrist was improved, but my left one was still swollen. I taped it up and Kenny and I headed to the gym. The sun popped out for a little while (Yay! had not seen any in a week) so we took a two mile walk outside to warm up before our work out. It was too hot for me to run, and I figured it was good for my system to have some time to calm down anyway.

I did get some leg and core work accomplished, so at least today was not a total bust, and we took another walk before we went home. Good vitamin D time

The swelling is going down now, so hopefully things will be back to normal Monday

After a solid week of rain this past week... the the forecast for next week (drum roll) ...rain, most days (sigh).

Soggy in VA,
Karen

How was last week for you?
Who got to see some sun this past week?

  1. That's crazy that you get sick like that! The heat bothers me but I don't have any specific flare ups, just general blech. I can't believe how warm it has been for you all! We're going to cool off this week. I mean really cool off.. :(

    1. It bugs me, I have similar symptoms each time, and no answers. You know what my Doc tells me, stop running if you get sick...ugh. It is the old it hurts here Doc, so don't touch there, conversation, it doesn't feel productive, so I keep trying to find the line. The heat is tough. Cooler is nice, but below freezing and wind aren't fun!

  2. Look at your chart! You had a very active week. I've never even heard of ganglion cysts. It sure sounds aggravating! I hope by tomorrow you are feeling better. Isn't it always something? Ugh! I had the same heat and rain -- an absolutely misery since Monday. Thankfully, it just sprinkled on me the two times I ran. I want to see that movie too. Thanks for linking, Karen! Happy New Year!

    1. My week was going well, if only I could have accomplished my long run...not meant to be, I guess. I developed the cysts about 7 yrs. ago, if treated they often come back so I typically ride it out. Sometimes weight lifting will aggravate them but they usually stay really manageable till I get over heated, no logic at all, completely weird.
The movie was really funny! M.W. is easy on the eyes :)
I am glad you got through your long run :)

  3. I hope you are all back to normal and feeling good now. I don't know anything about those cysts - does not sound fun. I'm sorry about that. We actually got to enjoy rain for a full day one day last week. It was quite nice for a change and gave me an excuse to not leave the house. I hear we are supposed to get more which is nice except it messes with trail running a bit. Well I hope you have a great end to the year and Happy 2016!

    1. I really did plan to visit a trail a few hours from me and get some running and hiking in, but we had so much rain, I think I need to wait for a drier time!
Thanks, I hope to finish the year strong this week :)

  6. Sorry about the flare-up, but I'm impressed that you went to the gym any way. I was out there with you on rainy, humid runs this weekend. Yesterday we got out for a bike ride - woohoo!

    1. Hubby wanted to go to the gym, so I figured why not do some leg work :) Thank you, the flare ups are bothersome but at least they pass fast. A bike ride sounds good in the heat!

  9. Glad to hear you are feeling better. I can't believe how warm it has been here. I also got a few runs in outside last wk. Unfortunately I think the warmerweather is behind us as the forecast shows for chance of snow showers tonight.

    1. Thanks! Every-time I think I have a grip on the warmer runs, I always go down. I can't figure out how to avoid it, other than not run...so I keep trying :)
Snow showers...what a big difference!! It is supposed to rain here all week. I am over rain lol

    1. I know - it was so warm for Christmas, felt strange! The day will come when you can run on Christmas, but it hard when they are little to get away. The cooler weather popped in today, but it is still raining! UGH

  11. Oh no. Sad you hear that you were ill. Hope you are feeling better and can get back to running.

I get cold sores (actually it's a virus) on my left arm when I am very very warm or stressed. Sometimes I even get a fever. Very annoying (& ugly)

    1. I am feeling much better and I got my long run in :) Cooler air finally came in and the was a break in the rain, so I figured I better do it. I have wondered if I have some kind of virus or other issue that causes the strange symptoms I get, but I have never been able to make much sense out of it. Just ride it out. I am sure you have some similar frustrations when you arm breaks out, it is uncomfortable and you can't control it... I try to keep pushing on and not let things slow me up too much :)

  12. It was so nasty last week. I was able to get in my run on Wed. It looked like it could rain at any minute but didn't. I didn't know the heat and humidity brought on the cysts. I'm sorry you had to deal with that and were sick. Hope your better now. The weather was crazy, dealing with tornadoes was not fun last week. They were north of us but still. My Christmas was fun in between the rain. We did some hiking too. That was fun. Gosh, you reminded me this IS the last Weekly Wrap of 2015! Wow! Thanks for linking with us! Hope you have a great New Year and hey 2016 is going to be awesome, I just know it! :)

    1. It was a tough week! Heat does not bring on my cysts, they are just there. When I get over heated they do swell though, normally they are like pea size lumps and they blow up three times that big. I can not make any sense out why they swell in the heat and humidity, but it happens every time I get one of my little episodes. I keep hoping I will find someone who has some insight! So far it seems none of runner buds have the cysts. Anyway, I am felling so much better today, at least it passes fast!
Your trip looked amazing! I wish you could have had some better weather. I love hiking :) It is a miracle you got a run w/o getting wet lol 2015 is a wrap!

  13. I thought I was going to enjoy the warm Christmas Eve and Christmas runs but I did not enjoy them at all! It was so muggy and just awful! I'm sorry your cysts were bothering you. :( I never heard of ganglion cysts but I google imaged it and got some awesome (HA) surgery photos!

    2. Those surgery pictures scare me LOL That why I just leave them in there! They usually don't bother me much, I have no idea why they swell in heat but that when they seem to act up the most.
The muggy was something last week. Luckily, it left here today but it still raining...ugh. I will friend you - I am not very active on FB though lol

  15. One of my clients has ganglion cysts, and having her tell me about them was the first time I'd heard of them. I'm bummed for you that you're experiencing a flare-up, and while taking time off from work. :-(

We're pretty much experiencing the same weather as you, only about two hours north! :-)

Have a great week, and Happy New Year!

    1. I feel a lot better today! It is odd how they flare up. Every so often they will impair my weight lifting but not too much.
I think there is a line that seems to cut around the Fredericksburg area, sometimes we are close and other times it seem to be a lot colder in that area...can you tell I obsessively stalk weather lol Happy New Year :)

  16. What a bummer to hear about the ganglion cysts! I am glad they are getting better now. I totally understand how running, heat, humidity, and the body don't mix well. Then to add rain to all of that? You are a superwoman for pushing through! In the meantime, rest up well and I hope the rain lets up for you soon!!!
