Taper

"Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is relax."
Mark Black

Flipping through my Garmin calendar, looking at old run splits, yes, I like torture myself, ¯\_()_/¯  I noticed I typically dedicate 7.5 to 11 hours a week on fitness related activities.

I decided a few weeks at 6.5 hours wouldn't kill me.
MondayNothing
Tuesday Cycling 10 mi (56:43)
20 min. stretching/leg lifts
WednesdayCycling 4.5 mi (18:17)
62 min. upper bodywork
ThursdayNotta...
FridayNothing again
SaturdayWalking 7.51 mi (2 hrs.)
Stretching
Sunday Cycling 10.25 miles (59:46)
66 min. leg work and stretching

I had to flip all the way back to March 2015 to find my low week, 5.50 hours.  I remember that week. I wasn't feeling well, and I made it my mission to accomplish my simple life goal.

Work up a good sweat, four times a week.
That life goal has served me well for years now

You don't have to push like a nut every week I told myself.
The world will not stop turning, take a little step back if you need it.

I still miss my kitty...

I still don't have my work out buddy, hubby is still coughing up stuff. Quite the plague, he caught...

I managed to get my kitchen clean, and put away the Christmas decorations that have been sitting boxed up on my table for a long time.
I combed my kitties, baked some potatoes for my work lunches, talked to a friend I missed... I tried not to waste the hours away. Well, I did watch Dr. Phil (had not seen it in a few months), but I seem to enjoy watching crazy...
Sad, but true.
Ahhh, nothing on it :) True story, I had been ignoring the Christmas stuff that was sitting there.

I still worked out, but I needed my little taper ya'll...

Funny, it feels crazy to try to bike outside in this weather, but it is never too cold when the sun is shining for a walk.
22 degrees and windy, but I didn't care one bit...

I took it easy, stopped to look at the geese, walked around the water, and my spirits greatly lifted.
I do have to limit my walking time right now, and I probably lingered longer than I should have, but I admit, I wanted to stay out longer.
Hopefully next month I can start logging some walking miles more regularly.  It is almost as a good a fix, as a run :)

In the market for trail shoes?  Merrell trail shoes have some great grip.

My hubby refurbished my 15 year old Kirby and it works like new. What a man, xoxo :) I appreciated it more than flowers or jewelry.
No worries though, I did have some yummy treats as well ;) ❤

  1. So today on that brutal cold long run, I passed a guy riding his bike. I thought to myself, there goes someone who is suffering more than me. Isn't it always about perspective?

I miss my pup Cleo too. I feel you. Today i was eating pretzels and I almost tossed one for her to catch. Old habits die hard.

    1. Awwww, that hurts my heart. I think about my Otto when I am eating and when I come in the door, he use to run to greet me. Faithful little friends...
I actually sat on a really cool fat tire bike. I parked next to a few people who were going to hit the trails, they were all layered up lol Maybe I should try it once!

  2. I know you miss Otto. :( But, I'm glad to hear you got out in that glorious sunshine for a walk! 5.5 hours is a lot of time to be active! Sweating 4 times a week is a perfectly awesome goal. It doesn't always have to be more, more, more. Does it? I spent some time packing up junk for donation and getting organized. Gosh, that felt so good. I got a sweet Valentine's card and we went to dinner (and the kids gave me M&Ms). And, hubs fixed the bathroom fan/light. A win! Thanks for linking with us Karen!

    1. It is funny how four days a week turned into five and six pretty regularly, than once I got into that rhythm I was afraid to cut back lol I am kind of wacky sometimes...
I just felt tired and I need my body to have enough energy to heal. Trying to find balance :)
Ewwww, cleaning stuff out always makes me happy! Sounds like you had a nice Valentine's Day to me.

  3. Rest days, cut-back weeks, taking it easy while we heal or recover -- it's all good! Walking outside in a place like that looks like it's good for the body and soul! I realized last week I have a pile of Christmas gifts shoved in a corner I haven't put away yet ... and I still haven't. ;-)

    1. ha! I am glad I am not the only one who still had remnants of Christmas lol
I am working on that balance - enough to generate healing, and not deplete the process.

  4. Hugs to you on missing your kitty. Hopefully the cut-back week does you some mental and physical good. It seems that a few of us on the weekly wrap aren't on our normal game for various reasons right now. Hope you have a good week Karen.

    1. Thanks Kelli :) Sometimes we just need to step back a little. I am not good at this, I need to learn I will be okay if I do. I hope you have a better week!

  5. Yay for getting the table cleaned off! I always thing that feels to good to have clean counters, table etc. A taper is good for the body I agree. I try to have cut back weeks once a month or so. Hope your hubby gets to feeling better soon.

I need to start incorporating more easy weeks in like that on a regualr basis :)

  8. I like to torture myself by looking through my old Garmin mileage and splits too. It's torture but also good to remind ourselves what we're capable of when we're 100%.

I prefer spending time together doing something we both like over flowers... especially since I am allergic to most flowers! haha

I am afraid I will never accomplish some on those speedier runs again, but as long as I can get back I will be okay.

  10. You will get through this. It's tough when you are injured in the winter...so much nicer to walk and bike when it is warm. But You have a great attitude. Keep smiling!!!

I can't wait to hear that you are running again!!

  11. I'm so glad you got out to enjoy the walk in the sunshine, doesn't it just make you feel better to soak in some of those rays?
It's always good to go back and see where you've come from to appreciate where you are. You'll be back at it soon enough, during this you may learn something new about yourself. Take care my friend, I can't say enough how much I appreciate you being there for us!

    1. The rays give me some kind of crazy mood boost. I don't do well in summer heat and sun, so I cherish this time of year. I am so opposite from everyone, but this ginger skin can't do summer sun.

  12. Would prefer my husband to fix something, or do something I don't like doing. Hands down !

Look at those gorgeous blue skies ! Brings me back to my childhood in Maine. Although they are having really cold weather at the moment and I am NOT missing that.

You do a heck of a lot of exercise a week, good for you ! hope your foot is feeling OK.

  13. I never really thought of my workouts in hours, always miles. I went to a trail running camp back in October and they too, mentioned that you can track by hours instead of miles. I guess since trails are all so different. You've given me something to think about. I hope your hubby gets better soon. I've had that congestion now for 1 week and boy does it make working out challenging?! YES, it does! Have a great week Karen!

    1. That congestion is the worst, I hope you feel better soon :)
I hardly ever notice hours either, but as I was looking at my Garmin calendar it total your hours spent, and it started to dawn on why i felt so tired LOL

  14. I'll always go with a fix over flowers... flowers die so quickly & are SOOO expensive at V-Day.
Glad to see you staying so active even with the foot issue.
Love your leggings in your pic!

  17. Way to go getting out there for a walk. This wkend was so cold and windy that I didn't even want to go out for our Valentine's dinner. We still went and were disappointed anyway. Since I am not married it is nice to get gifts. I got two dozen roses. He did good. Hope your hubby gets over this cough so he can start going on walks with you again.

  19. You are looking lean and mean, my friend! The gym agrees with you. :) It does feel weird to stop doing something, but yes the world doesn't stop spinning. I think the pool is calling to you. You know I loathe it but the water is SO much easier on the body. You're a triathlete waiting to happen....

    ReplyDelete

    1. Awwwm, thanks Marcia :0) I am not feeling lean and mean these days, I have picked up a good handful of pounds since I stopped running.
My gym doesn't have a pool so I would have to change to a more (much more) expensive membership. That has been what is holding me back with the pool. Oh, I am such a weak swimmer! I would need some serious lessons lol maybe one day...

  20. You are looking great. Fixing something over flowers does it for me too. How is the foot doing?

    1. Thank you :) I have gained some weight not running...ugh.
The foot is slow healing. My toes are only slightly back in place, but I keep doing my exercises and taping the toes. I still have a little pain in the ball of the foot, but overall that has finally improved after all this rest.

  21. OOH tough one! Sometimes you just want flowers to brighten your day and feel like someone loves you!

  22. What a beautiful blue sky!

Good for you for cutting back! In the long run, it's going to be good for us to take easier weeks from time to time.

Huge hugs to you. I know you are having a really rough patch with your foot issues and loss of your kity :(

  23. ummmmm...I just finally got the last of my Christmas stuff dragged down to the basement (still not yet in the proper crawl space, though, yet...). And that stuff only got moved because I was hosting a luncheon (which wound up getting cancelled due to the weather)or it would still be sitting on my dining room table LOL
