Talking Beauty Today

Or in my case, I guess it would be lack of lately...

I love my early morning work outs, but they do come at a price. On days I am trying to run I set my alarm for 4:45. I often hit the snooze button at least once, but there are days I hop right up and get to it! I usually have about 45 minutes to get myself together, after I work out. My goal is to be finished working out by 6 a.m., but I rarely do it...it is usually closer to 6:15 a.m.

I have make up, cleansers, and hydrating lotion, but I rarely have time to use it! It is usually a mad dash to shower, dress, collect my lunch items, and dodge out the door.

My hair usually looks kind of very stringy if I don't blow dry it.

I often wear it up now. The back is still wet in this pic!

There was a time in life, I wouldn't go to work without being dressed, make up just so, and hair dry. Somewhere down the line I just let that go. My work out, that keeps me sane is much more important, although some days I do feel borderline presentable. LOL

Some days I do get my hair dry, but there isn't time for much else.

  • Shower
  • wash hair
  • blow dry hair
  • fill in eyebrows
  • foundation
  • powder
  • lip gloss
  • mascara optional depending on time
I have to fill in my eyebrows because they are super light. I do pad some foundation and powder on - the experts say that is an old lady, no no. Powder shows off the lines more, but I have tried to go without powder, and a few hours into my day I am shiny, even though my skin is super dry! A lot of days I don't even bother with mascara.

Remember Stacey and Clinton (I use to love What Not To Wear) - they would tear this outfit up for sure! This is a look of convenience.

It doesn't fit right all that great, the shirt it is stretchy so there is no ironing, and I stick with pants all the time now, because I have to wear my Dansko shoes everyday. (crazy feet)
I have a closet full of stretchy material-ed shirts lol tsk, tsk...

Last week I tried sandals, and oh... how my feet protested! I will not be able to wear a dress this summer until I can find a shoe. My Clark flip flops aren't even enough cushion for my feet.

Luckily, I live close to work. A few years ago, when I lived about 40 minutes away, a morning work out wasn't even a possibility, unless I got up at 4 a.m...

What are your must have things to feel presentable in the morning?
What are your favorite beauty items?
Does your hair need to be blow dried to look its best?
What is your routine like?

  1. That's why I rarely run before work.

My hair takes no time because I wash it at night and rarely.

I do wear minimal make up (I'm OLD!!)

I wear dresses a lot because it hides a lot!! (I refuse to buy a bigger size pants so they are tight!)

    I think you look great!!!

    1. Thank you Darlene :)
I wish I could get away not washing my hair so much, but I sweat a lot! LOL That sure make me faster in the a.m. for sure.
I like dresses too, it is killing I can not throw one on. I am battling the middle buldge for quite awhile now.

  2. I am always the most minimal of getting ready.
Mascara is the one thing I MUST have... I should do more foundation or some sort of coverage (hello age spots)
I am so casual in clothes too - what's ironing? :)
I always think you look great - working or sweating! & your smile is your most gorgeous accessory I see on you every time :)

    1. Awww, thank you Rebecca Jo :) I am going to remember that a smile is a good accessory. I need to wear one more often.
I walk by stuff if it needs dry cleaning or ironing lol

  3. You are a beauty and you have fabulous hair! I traded foundation for Clinique's Superpowder years ago and it's still my go-to. I try not to blow dry all summer but my latest cut seems to require it.

    1. Thank you Marcia :) My hair makes me crazy...I still toy with just letting the gray do its thing.
It is funny how some styles need that blow dryer, but it sure looked pretty in your IG :)
I need to look at the Superpowder, I used to use a Clinique foundation - right now I use Estee lauder.

  4. I don't wear make up to work anymore and rarely outside of work either (and I'm not even a morning runner anymore). Why bother? All I need to get ready is a shower, toothbrush, and deodorant. If I showered the night before I will sometimes straighten my hair in the morning, but I don't blow dry it. Again, why bother? If I had a more public-facing job I might give two hoots about "looking pretty" but as it stands it's just not worth my time.

Is it possible to get up 10-15 minutes earlier for your workouts, so that your routine isn't such a mad dash?

    1. You are really low maintenance :) I do have public people see me, so I have look presentable so I don't get written up lol
I have been working on a 4:30 alarm, but I almost never get up! I just hit the snooze button. Since I can not run much anymore, I am just looking at two run mornings. I am hoping I can do that earlier call, a little easier with practice.

  5. I think your outfit is really cute! And I don't think Stacy & Clinton would tear it apart, either (I really miss that show!).

Since I don't work . . . and before that I worked from home . . . it means I don't have the $$ for manis or some other things working women just seem to take for granted, but I'm ok with that.

I actually do like to dress up; I guess since I don't have to do it every day. I usually dress up for my WW meeting, but that also depends on how I think the scale will treat me. :) I have a lucky WI dress that is very light . . . it'll be a sad day when I can no longer wear it!

OTOH, many years ago, when I was still working outside the home, I would exercise before work, too. I'm just a morning person, always have been (and I had to be at work really early!).

    1. Stacey and Clinton were so cute! Aww, thanks...I was thinking I would make them fuss. lol
I work, but I still feel like I am on the minimalist plan with self care lol I get manis about every 6 or 7 weeks and usually dye my own hair, but tomorrow I am going to have someone do my hair! I hope I like it :/
I guess it is fun to dress up when you go out! I am usually worn out from work..thinking i can just go to the store in jammie's lol but I don't!

One of the reasons I love to work out in the morning, it means one shower! The perks of being a morning person :) When I do weights after work, I have to shower again...it just seems to suck up too much time. I still do it a few afternoons a week though.

  6. I used to LOVE WNTW. I still think of Stacy and Clinton when I buy nice clothes. But I wear a uniform to work so I rarely put any effort or thought into my outfits on a daily basis.

I really enjoy my beauty routine when I see results...much like working out haha. It's nice to pamper myself and I'm hoping that by taking care of my skin now, it will age well. I think makeup is so fun!

    1. I think about S & C when I shop! lol but I still buy things they would say no too lol
I like the idea of not having to think about what to wear - a uniform sounds good to me for work :)
Absolutely, taking care of your skin will pay off :) I wish I had done better when I was younger!

  7. I think your hair looks great pulled up like that--really nice, Karen. So, I get up REALLY early so I have time to shower, apply make up and do my hair after I workout. My time to get ready is about 35-45 minutes. Even the days I work from home, I still get myself ready. I just have never been a no make up girl. I really enjoy to put it on and I honestly think I look pretty bad w/ out it. P.S. I think you look super cute in that outfit.

    1. Thank you Susan :) I can pull my hair up loosely now that it is longer without getting a headache but as it dries it get a lot flyways lol - I am considering cutting it all off again, but I can never decide.
That is good you enjoy getting ready and pulling yourself together. I always wish I had a little more of that in me. I bet you look just fine without make up, but we all have our must have things to feel comfortable. I am like that with foundation. I feel funny with out it, even if that is all I have on I feel better. My skin is really freckled and damaged, the foundation smooths things out.

  8. Karen, you look great on your pictures ! And I think it's fantastic that you pick fitness so early in the morning ! At the end of the day a 3 mile run will make you feel better than the make up.

I don't wear any make up... Only spf mosturizer. And my favorite thing in the summer is to let my hair dry on its own.

    1. Thank you Ana :) You have great skin tone, you don't need make up!
That is so true, the run always makes me feel better :)
I am so enviuos of ladies who can air dry their hair.

  9. It's like I wrote this post. Eyebrows? Where are they? Danskos? Yes. Hair? Pulled back in a pony tail nub because it's humid...LOL!

  10. I prefer to work out in the morning, because we don't have fixed hours at work. I work internationally, so I am connected constantly to my computer because of the time zones. I can start at 8 or 10, it makes no difference, because I can also have calls at 8 or 10 at night. It is great to have that flexibility.

I do my hair every day, but have short hair and it only takes 5 minutes.
If I work at home, I don't do any make up.
If I go to work, I do the complete make up haul over ! Foundation, eye shadow, mascara... the whole 9 yards. My foundation is not powder and I am very careful with how much I put on. Just enough to even out my skin tone.... I took a make up lesson once and they said foundation was the one must have because it evens out your skin tone and unifies it. I agree !
And you look fabulous BTW !

    1. Your flexibility sounds wonderful to me! I have never had schedule flexibility and I need to be in my chair at work pretty much.
I love your hair, I have cut my short before and I debate now if I should just do it again!
I need a make up lesson. I always have a time trying to pick a foundation.
and thank you, I really don't feel fabulous most days.

  11. I'm probably low-maintenance to a fault. Brushing my teeth and washing my face are my "must have" things in the morning and I don't wear makeup. I don't have a blowdrier and just air-dry my hair. :]

      keeping it simple is nice.

  12. Definitely one of the areas where I'm happy to be a guy. I keep my hair super short so I can just get up and go. Doesn't matter if I'm running or just headed to work no maintenance needed. Work closes super simple Polo and slacks and I'm out the door. I don't know what I would do if it was any more difficult than that LOL

  13. Well I always tell you how beautiful you are but DAMN I never saw you with glasses and an up do! I love that look on you! I have the same powder problem- it shows my lines but I don't know what else to do. I would never go to work without makeup. My skin is so bad that I would be embarrassed not to. :(

    1. Well thanks Megan. I really don't feel good about how I leave the house a lot of days, but I would rather work out.
I hate the shiny thing! If you ever find a foundation that cancels the need to put some powder on - please share! I have tried all kinds...thick, thin, mate finish...
Your skin looks porcelain. I always think you look so pretty...what do you dislike about your skin? I have a lot of sun damage spots :(

    2. I get acne! :( In pictures it doesn't look bad because I wear foundation and powder but if I ever posted a picture with no makeup when I am broken out you would be horrified!

  14. I wear so little make-up that when I last saw my mom, she asked if I was wearing any. I usually exercise from about 4-5am a couple of days a week, but that's the earliest time. I'm getting used to waking up early when I don't have to now - kind of nice!

It sure is easier if you don't need make up!

  15. My hair definitely needs a blow dry, but all of last week I only blew it dry once. With my mileage increasing again, some nights I don't get home until 9pm. After eating dinner and spending time with Adam I go to bed really late and in the morning I would much rather sleep in than fuss with my hair. I did apply smoothing serum and spritz some sea salt texturing spray in but I'm not sure it helps all that much. A blow dry is definitely want I should be doing every morning! Oh well!

On days when I don't have time to do a full face of makeup I just do: primer, concealer, blush and finishing powder. Mascara sometimes makes it but my mascara is really wet (?) and takes time to dry before I can blink my eyes. Some days I don't even have 30 seconds to stand there holding back a blink, haha!

There was definitely a time in my early 20s that I would spend an hour on hair and makeup every morning no matter what - but the older I've gotten the more protective I am of my time. I suppose my priorities have shifted too!

I hope you can find some comfy shoes to wear dresses with this summer!

    1. It is something how we change, isn't it?!
ha! That is so funny, I totally get 30 seconds to dry the mascara and you don't have THAT much time LOL That is me exactly!
I am with you I should be blow drying everyday, but it just isn't a priority like it used to be. I was so bad in high school, I would spend 30 minutes curling my hair and still not want to go if I was having a bad hair day lol
It makes me sad, when I wear any shoe without my inserts my feet start really throbbing :( I don't want to wear pants all summer!
