Yep, It is Summer!

I am a little hesitant to post this...but I will just say it. I was confronted with what I dread most...summer running. LOL
I promise to leave this subject alone, after I tell you I struggled last week! Anyone else?

See my workout on Sunday the 5th...I ran,  I walked, I tried to run again...lol

I passed by this start/finish line on Sunday when I was trying to run.  I thought, thank goodness, I am not trying to race today!

Last week will probably be my last attempt at speed work for awhile... I was trying to do three minute pick ups. See, I try to be optimistic about heat, LOL but it is what is...
Look at my speed work in red. If you look closely, my recovery minutes were faster. This makes me laugh for some reason...that is how I feel lots of days, completely mixed up ;)
I was really happy I could keep myself moving to be honest.   Humidity - 1      Karen - 0

I plan to spend the next few weeks trying a few different things to see what works best for me. I have always used 4 x 1 intervals, but I plan to try out 2 x 1 and 3 x 1 intervals. I just need to see how it feels.

I am hoping VA has met its rain quota for awhile and I can get some more biking done. I've had a very long break from my bike, I need to get busy...it. is. time.

Somehow I avoided leg day all last week! I mean I like it once I get going, and I always feel good two days later, when I am sore, but starting, well...obviously, that is the hardest part.

Lastly, I knew as soon as I posted about my desire to try to train for a fall marathon, my feet would flipping melt down....and they did. Murphy's law. It seems even with shorter runs, 4 days a week is too much, so I guess 3 running days will be the magic number for awhile. It is all good though, because I will be biking more, right :)

I am posting my weekly wrap up way late! I am I am linking up with blog buddies to tell ya'll I am pushing on!  Join in with Holly @ hohoruns and Tricia@ MissSippiPiddlin

Have a fabulous week!
Oh! and yes, I did my push ups today! Thank you for the motivation from Marcias-Healthy-Slice- FB
Maybe I will get a little stronger by the end of June :) Check out the link Marcia shared.

Anyone ever try 3 x 1 or  2 x 1 intervals?
Did you do speed work last week?
Anyone else put off leg day?
Anyone race this past weekend? I am still trying to catch up on blogs!
What do you have coming up?

  1. Luckily I have no upcoming races. With the humidity that it has been I'm kind of glad that I have nothing scheduled. I have never done intervals but I'm sure the difference in the time will help during this high humidity. Have a great wk!

Hope you have a great week :)

  2. You're doing better than me! I haven't done any speed training for weeks and weeks! I am not sure what happened to me, but I have started just doing what I feel like everyday and lately, it's trail running and some beach running. I am sorry about your feet pain. I get pretty bummed out when leg pain jacks with my plans so I sort of know how you feel. We did run RnR San Diego this weekend and RnR Seattle is next for me. Happy training!!

    1. I think all your trail and hill training is speed work in disguise! It is good for you :) I will be by to read about your race. Hope you have a great week.

  3. The humidity sucks all of the life out of me too. It's amazing how much faster our hearts beat when it's hot + humid isn't it?

I just started following a blogger who ran a 5:XX marathon using 30:30 run/walk intervals:

    http://www.ivieandaj.com/

I think 30/30 would totally throw me off but I love that she did it!

    1. PS: Just double checked and she did 1min/30sec intervals. Her marathon PR is 5:27 I think!

    2. Thanks for the link!! I need to read this. I am going to play around and try shorter intervals just to see if it helps my foot pain and helps in the heat. It can't hurt to try!
My heart rate soars when it is really humid. Last year I had a few times I had to stop because I felt funny, so I am sure it'll happen again. You know, my feet are hurting a bit more since it really got hot :/

  4. I did run a 5k last weekend. It went well. And if I lived where you live, no doubt I'd be on the treadmill ALL summer.

You should check into the RW Run Faster, Run Less -- all about training for halfs or fulls on just 3 x week. And I've spent quite a few weeks in the last year, for one reason or another, running just 3 x week.

    1. I have read the chapter from that they give for free on Amazon, I think i will purchase it! I think 3 days will be my limit for awhile.
I am glad to hear the 5K went well :) I will read about it soon!
I want to move lol hubby doesn't seem interested.

  5. Not the heat, please not the heat. We are getting really hot so I know exactly what you mean.

I was just telling myself last night that I need to start doing speedwork again.

    1. I enjoy speed work, but I think I will abandon it for summer.
I hope I can get to trail run a little more, that seems to really help me.
I know you have high heat!

  6. I am doing the Color Run Saturday & its supposed to be in the 90's. I havent ran in over a month so I know the heat is going to kill me. Its about fun anyways so no 'race' for me :)

  7. Humidity is the worst. I love the sunshine and the warmth but NOT for running.

I need to run less and drag out my bike for some more exercise.

Good luck. Slow and steady wins the race!!

It is funny when I start walking, I always think well, it isn't so bad out lol then I try to run... oh, yea it is.
Evenings are better here but the bugs are out!

  8. I am so there with you on the heat and the humidity! It's the only part about the summer that I wish would end! Speedwork is hard enough to do even before throwing in all the challenges of the weather. I think it's fun to experiment with different intervals! Can't wait to hear what you think. =) 3 days of running a week is about my max, too. I'm too injury prone to do more than that - but 3 days has worked very well for me over the years!

    1. I really enjoy speed work but it time to abandon it for summer, unless I decide to treadmill it :)
I think 3 days a week will be about it for me too. Booo, to injuries, why do they steal all our fun.
I may end up sticking with 4 x 1 - but you never know until you try :)

  9. I started off with 4:1 intervals but decreased to 3:1 for most of my training. I would be way too tired after 4:1 on the long runs....
    Hoping your foot settles down.

    1. Thanks Karen! That is good to know it made a difference. I think I will try the next run and see how I feel. My foot doesn't seem to like the heat - it's weird it flared up. Thanks - hopefully I get to run again this week.

  10. I'm so excited you're doing the pushups! You're going to be SO strong (you are already) I just know it. We had one amazingly cool day today (didn't even hit 70) but we're heading to the 90's (for my tri, help) the rest of this week and next. Since my hip acted up, I've done zero speedwork. WHen it's hot I do it on the mill, cuz I'm useless in the heat.

    1. I really want to get some in everyday, I discovered today I may not be able to up it everyday, but I am hoping to increase my numbers!
Ewww, cool is nice! The heat is tearing me up, but it always does. I hope the heat doesn't slow you down for your race.
I have not tried the TM in so long, maybe I need to revisit :) The humidity won't break here anytime soon.

  11. The humidity is here!!! I feel it in the ams for sure! I did do speed work last week. They were 800s and they weren't bad at all. This week I did 1000s (never did those before!) and they were also okay!

1000's ?? how long did that end up being? I am retired from any speediness until September - maybe??

  12. It doesn't seem fair that summer comes out of NOWHERE and we're not ready for it at all! We have to acclimate and the weather is like, oh hey, let me be 1 million degrees overnight!

    Blah. I feel your pain!

  13. Great job on your workouts despite the heat! I just have to accept that I slow down significantly in the summer months. Like you said it is what it is. Hope your foot feels better. I usually stick to four runs a week too, but my new training plan has five with one rest day and one cross training day. I'm going on two months now running five days a week. So far so good (knock on wood).

    1. I always get a lot slower in summer. I am worried this year may be really hard since I can not run much.
It is great you can run five days a week :) I miss being on feet so much!

  14. Ugh I also hate summer running! Blah! I cannot understand why so many people get excited about it. I dread running in hot weather more than I dread running in cold. At least in the cold, the run warms me up! But when it's hot...there's just no relief from that. It's the worst.

I'm running a 6.5 mile race this weekend and the temperature that day is shooting up to 89 degrees. BECAUSE OF COURSE IT IS! The bizarre thing is that as I sit here typing this, it's not even 60 degrees out. I was actually COLD this AM, and it's going to be 90 on race day Saturday. Mother Nature has a strange sense of humor.

Someone above mentioned the Run Less Run Faster plan of 3x per week, but I would caution against that if you feel you are injury prone. Yes you only run 3x per week, but each of those runs is a HARD workout. There is no easy running in that plan, even your long runs are on the fast side.

    1. Oh man, of course it will be 90 on race day! It is hard to swallow when that happens, especially when it has been nice all week. I've had that happen to me several times. I guess that is why I was always leery to race much when I started running.
I can not do three hard work outs a week for sure. I was doing okay trying get one in before, but I don't think I can even handle that this summer. My feet seem to be hurting a lot more in heat, I have no idea why, but they are not cooperating.
I really think I will have to try to train 3 days a week, mostly easy runs because it will be humid here until Oct/Nov...I guess I will have to increase my biking and cross training and hope it is enough.

  17. I'm just doing "junk miles" as they say. I should but I'm not motivated to try for speed work as hot as it's getting. My trainer did the Wednesday leg workout with me. I love when she does it too cause she's less likely to say 5-more, lol. She even texted me the next day saying she was sore!
Blogs?, oh gosh, I'm struggling so much, I love that our linkup has gotten so big but I feel like I'm failing miserably to read every word and respond like I should :(

    1. Hey all miles are good for your fitness right :)
It is too hot for speed work! I am going to be realistic and retire that for summer lol
It is a challenge getting to everything everyone posts. I do my best each week to make sure I try to check in with at least one post! I wish I had time to do more.

  18. It's funny how you dread summer running. This week I finally was able to run in shorts and a short sleeve t shirt and feel so speedy! In Colorado, winter slows me down. The cold makes it harder to breath and even though I have great (non bulky) running gear, it does start to weigh you down.

What is the temp when you get out to run? It's been around 55 for me and it is perfect.

Sorry your feet are not cooperating! Yes for sure bike more. I will be biking tomorrow because I have logged about 10 miles in the last 2 days and tomorrow we will be going to a Rockies game so walking a whole lot. I don't want to tax my feet so cycling it will be.

I put off leg day, too. I love lifting back, shoulders and chest the most! But gotta train the legs, too. I will do that tomorrow since Sunday is a rest day from working out.

  19. Right there with you. We've been on the coast this week. Holy kryptonite!! I get out there and think "how in the heck am I going to do this all summer?" And it's technically not summer yet! I'm going slow but can't seem to endure. Biking is better but I've got a little thing called a marathon I've got to train for. I'm going to have to run. Boo. I swore I would never complain about the weather after my last injury. And just look at me whining away. LOL. Hang in there Karen and thanks for linking.
