August Runfessions

On the last Friday of the month, I finally got a post ready to link-up with Marcia to share my runfessions!

August came with great mental fatigue and just when my resiliency was at the moment of crumble,
I was so blessed this week to have a few runs that weren't in the 75 - 80+ degree range. It was LIFE changing. I am not kidding, I was hanging by a thread, I was at my limit with scorcher runs.

I runfess after my long run last week, I had decided I wasn't going to put myself through the heat misery anymore. My resolve, my goals, my optimism, all of it, just seemed silly. I was melting down.

Then when I woke up Monday at 5:00 a.m. and it was 68 degrees.
Normally, I don't even like 68, but I was so thrilled for any reprieve I enjoyed my morning :)

I runfess some strange anger melted away. Is is silly to feel angry over being hot?! Yes! but three months in, I was done trying to stay positive and smile through it...

Monday inspired me to push out a little speed session on Tuesday morning, and it breathed life and a sense of hope into me that better things are coming.
I runfess I felt a bit manic. I went from, I quit. To setting new goals.

I runfess I kind of went on a binge this week and crammed all my running in because of the forecast.

Thursday morning it was 67 degrees and I got a half marathon done before I went to work!
The temp didn't help my pace at all, but at least I didn't feel like jumping off a cliff...so there's that ㋡

I runfess I went into work late in the best mood. I should take a few personal hours late every week to run.

#seenonmyrun

I had to hustle when I got to work, but it was totally worth it. ❤
I runfess I get a strange sense of satisfaction when I see all that orange :) A few degrees make a big difference in how hard my heart is pounding.

The weather man warned the humidity and heat would be back full blaze on Friday, and he was right. I just opened my door to take the trash out and it is so humid you can't breathe. Big SIGH.

I runfess I still love to run, but I am so glad I can take the next few days off!

Have you ever gone in late just because you needed or wanted to run?
As August winds down are feeling inspired or worn out?

  1. I totally understand how heat unravels you! It wears on me mentally and physically when it comes to running and I let doubt creep in. I'm so glad you got some cool temps! Going into September I am feeling worn out. Then again I pretty much always feel worn out on Friday. I'll be better after a weekend! Thanks for linking!

    1. It wears on me too. I never seem to acclimate, I just get weaker. The heat is so bad today!! I am glad I had a brief glimpse so I could snap out of it though.
Hope you have a great weekend :)

  2. The cool weather was a welcome reprieve this week and reminded me that I've got some running skills. The heat really messes with my head and my confidence! Hang in there. It's almost over...

    1. Exactly, really messes with my head.
I hope it is almost over! I kept telling myself...one more month. You can do it for one more month, kind of like that last mile lol

  3. Ha! Just yesterday I went in an hour late because of running LOL. Also, on the days when I stay til "close of business" (5:00PM), there's not a lot of stuff to do bright and early at 8:00....so I gave everyone the heads-up that I'd be in an hour later than usual. And, all was right with the world.

  4. Getting a run in before work is always work all the hustle and the time in the morning! I always wish I had your determination to get up so early!

I like it when in the summer it gets below 72 and it feel like absolutely perfect weather!

    enjoy your running break!

    1. It is really hard to get up now, it is getting so dark in the a.m. I hope I don't waiver.
I like it below 72 if the humidity is low!! Problem is the humidity is pretty relentless here. Thank you, i am being very lazy right now LOL

  5. Wow, that's impressive that you got a half marathon in before work! I've been trying to wake up early to get some pre-work runs in but I only make 3 miles or so.

    1. Awww, thanks Chaitali :) I would enjoy 3 miles, trust me, but I really want to keep pushing the feet to see if I can get this marathon done.

  6. You had me laughing at how you describe you get angry at HEAT. But it strangles us, I get it! It was a lot less humid here too and I had some runs in the low 8s! Didn't run yet today but now you have me scared that it is going to be humid!

    1. It does strangle, I like the description, it is just how I feel! I guess I get annoyed that I have zero control over it but can't escape it.
Today is brutal here, non-breathing yuck air. I hope your run goes well! Wasn't it fun to feel that break!?

  7. Worn out. Definitely worn out. And it's totally disgusting out there today. I really hope it's not as humid tomorrow morning, and I'm not sure I'll get in my runs at all at my parents -- and it's definitely going to be hot there!

    Glad you caught a break!

    1. Good luck at your parents! I hope all goes well and you get to run.
I don't like the worn down feeling but that is how I roll lately. It is so hot here today, I am being very lazy.

  8. In answer to your question #1) Every.Day
In answer to your question #2) Worn.Out

I'm hanging on by that thread right now. Also, I don't always get the heart rate zone bars on my runs (I always get the red graph though). I can't figure out why! Maybe when it's all in Zone 5 and Garmin thinks "why bother"?

WE get to run...WE get to run...WE get to run. I'm going to ball when my weather breaks. Like a baby.

    1. haha, late every day?! I can't get away with that, but I do think i will need a few hours in Sept. and Oct. each week to get what I need done.
I understand, I about balled Monday, I forget what it felt like to actually enjoy what I was doing. Now back to the cruel humid, i will probably cry for that reason next.
I am trying to keep the mantra going!
Sometimes on my phone my chart will not be there at all. I have never got part of a chart. Just missing.
It is always there if I log in on my desktop though! Do log in on a desk top and look?
Hang in there! I know it isn't easy.

  9. Yes. I have actually taken a day off from work to do a long run. We had a few coolish days but now the heat is back. I wish I had squeezed more runs ins.

    1. Today was kind of sad here too - 104 or something ridiculous. I am so thankful I got my long run done when I did. If something doesn't give, I really can't imagine running 13 again!

  10. And I can't imagine running 13 miles before work. I can't imagine running 13 miles right now at all.

  11. I missed all the good weather this week! I was in Miami where it was in the mid-80s and oppressively humid at 5:00 am.

    1. It was just a few days, but it does stink you missed it.

  12. Oh. Man. I can identify with this so strongly. I have felt so ANGRY and frustrated and impotent in the face of all this heat. I'm so glad you got to run in cooler weather and enjoy yourself. It honestly starts to really take so much out of you!!

    1. It is hard day after day when all you can do is smile and take it! I hope that short break was enough to refuel me, the humid is back in force and I don't want to go out there right now.
I know you rarely get a break!

  13. The heat and humidity really has been relentless. We are feeling good now in MN!!

Fall is just around the corner!
Great job getting in a lot of miles in the better weather!

    1. SO true Cheryl!! I had that problem last week, I couldn't breathe while biking, the air is tough.
I have my fingers crossed, but our forecast looks bleak for the next few weeks.

  16. Woohoo for getting 13.1 miles in before work!!! Now me, I'd have to clear out a whole day for that kind of mileage..lol. -M

  17. Getting in more than just a few miles before work is always tough on me. I don't know why but it is. I think it's more mental cause I do way more on Saturdays and then still go on with my day but I guess I'm not sitting at a desk.
This dang heat is wearing on everyone even us who are use to it. It's brutal this year! I'm so willing to give up my Summer stuff just for Fall to hurry and get here.

    1. I am with you about the sitting, I often feel pretty stiff when I run my 6 or 7 before work because I go and sit all day. Thursday I knew I would have some varied activity so it really helped knowing I would be up and moving a little.
It is almost 100 again today, I couldn't breath well trying to ride my bike. Any break in temp would be nice!

  18. You ran a half marathon before work? Go, you! Soon, I'll be complaining about the cold weather and I can't wait! (Maybe I should add that I live in not very cold Texas, though!)

    1. I got it done :)
ha! I love all the cold, the only thing I find tough is freezing temps and wind, other than that I'll take it!

  19. Yes, I have gone into work late because of running, but my schedule is quite flexible so it doesn't really matter. It is 100 degrees here and I am so glad it has only lasted a few days. It is HOT but we don't get the humidity. And I need to run tomorrow, so I am going to go out early, but it will still be 80 degrees. I feel for you !

    1. Oh my 80 is hot even if it isn't humid. I hope you don't have a super long run to do!
It is nice you have flexibility with your schedule :) it is nice not to feel rushed.

  20. I feel so bad for you and most of your readers that are commenting because we have hardly any humidity and the hottest run I had all summer was 63 degrees! It's actually getting "chilly" some mornings now (it was 48 today). I am so, so happy your feet are doing great! A half marathon is NO JOKE! Yay you, Karen! I can get to work anytime, really (I have the ability to work from home) but I keep my workouts to about an hour and maybe a little more if I lift, so it doesn't change my morning schedule. When I was swimming every day a few years back, I always left at 2 PM and went to swim then finished my day at home. That was nice. Have an excellent weekend!

    1. 48 - I am drooling! LOL how high up do you live?? That is amazing 63 has been your hottest. I am sad the heat came back, I am trying to brace myself to get back out there.
I felt really good doing 13- I have gad some pain but not until the next day! It's odd.
An hour is a good time frame :) I will gladly do that if I can get through this training. Doing anything for hours seems crazy!
That is great you have some flexibility and can work from home. That sounds delightful.
I am trying to talk my hubby into moving now lol I have also tried to suggest MT lol I love it there so much!

  21. We live at almost 5000 feet! I am coming to realize that how I struggle through snow in the winter (cold does not bother me as much) and count down to spring, you and many others struggle through summer and countdown to fall. Not sure there is a perfect area to live....San Diego, perhaps. Reading about all your struggles with heat/humidity make me grateful for Colorado and I hope to go into winter w/ a better attitude and know that most people deal with a season that is not ideal for running comfortably.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's true I guess we all season that is tough. We basically have about 6 months are good temp wise - but snow and ice will disrupt it. Last year we had terrible snow - I hope this year is lighter! I guess at that elevation you deal with a whole bunch of snow :(

      Delete
  22. Normally Colorado deals with snow from December - March. March, April storms can be epic but they are super wet snow and sun is shining so they don't stick around. I would say we have 8 - 9 months of pretty great weather. Winter is not my favorite but if you ski or do anything with the snow, you would love it. I am thinking of trying snow shoeing this year!

  23. If I didn't have to worry about getting to the office on time, I'd love to take ample time to run each morning before work!!! It really does make such an impact on the rest of the day, right? No better way to change the frame of mind and get things started on the right note. Congratulations and way to push through on everything this week!!!
