Is Week One Really Over?!

I am linking up with Holly and Wendy for the Weekly wrap! Welcome Wendy! Join in the fun! Click here for more info

Last week I had a pretty awesome New Eve's trail run..it was close to teens cold and my hair got hard and crusty where I sweated and it froze, but even so... I had a few of those moments...where your legs glide and you feel no resistance. I was soaring.

The run did not begin that way though, in fact one of my feet was so numb during the first mile I wondered if I should quit. One foot was a lot colder than the other..☃ is that weird? I kept going hoping it would get warm and was rewarded with some happy miles. The frozen hair was hilarious, but no picture.

Then I did not run for 5 days. I finished 2017 with a bang and then poof! My wick went out.

My toenail fell off New Year's Eve...that was a new experience. It had been terribly loose a few weeks but it still freaked me out a little when it finally happened.

When I ran the marathon on October 28th. it rained about 6 miles. It started toward the end about mile 17, my feet were soaked and slipping and sliding around in my shoes for those end miles and two of my toes turned black shortly after the race. About a month later (almost to the day) I came home from a run with a bloody sock. My toe looked a lot better after that but ultimately after another month the toenail came all the way off. That took a long time right?!

I don't want to post lots of feet pics, but I will gladly email a pic to show what it was hanging like if you are curious LOL

Anyway...I thought I would take a day off and wrap it when I ran next...but that next run never happened all week.
It snowed, so it was easy. There's ominous icicles hanging everywhere.

I could barely walk from the car to the gym without slipping so no snow running for me. If this ridiculous weather keeps up this southern gal may need to invest in a pair of the Yaktrax....who would have thought?! Certainly not me, I've lived here a lot of winters and never even seen flakes....these last few winters have sucked. Maybe I have the deep freeze blues?!! I have summer S.A.D. usually but I have always loved winter. This is weird!

Y'all, they don't plow any side streets here, and no melting has occurred since we are nonstop below freezing, and I run on roads with cars, no sidewalks...it is just too dangerous to try while cars are slipping all over.

Luckily, I have a trainer twice a week for a few months and we are doing lots of functional strength sessions. I am clumsy, challenged, and lack balance but I already knew thatπŸ˜…I am going to try to work on it and see what happens. The extra recovery days were probably okay, I had some strange soreness after 3 sessions the previous week doing an evaluation and trying new things, but I am starting to worry about losing all my run fitness...and I miss my runs!
I can't jump so I step up and it winds me...no joke
At a glance:
1 - Sleeeeeep
2 - Training session #5 1:21:47
3 - walking, rest
4 - Arc Machine - 0:23:04 - Training #6 - 1:10:36
5 - more rest
6 - First Run 2018 - 3.02 treadmill mi 0:34:49 - Mixed Cardio - 0:38:41
7 - 3 more TM miles - 3.20 mi 0:34:16 - Mixed cardio Again - 0:35:54

I am not powering head on into 2018, I am inching in.

I am now signed up for two races in April. One half and the local 10K. I added my upcoming events to my Athlinks profile and bravely put in my anticipated finish time. I better start running!! I want to see a 2:15 half again so bad.

Athlinks and BibRave recently teamed up, but I was already an account holder! It is a great way to assemble all your race results in one place...some folks may have to invest some time to claim them all :) like our host  who has run a ton of races, but it is nice to have your stats in one place. I added a few races that did not show in the search and it was a quick easy process.  I have always tried to keep a spread sheet where I drop the link to the results in so I can find something quickly if I need too, but I started slacking at it and now I don't really need it.

Speaking of assembling stats, I am also a Smashrun user and I love it. It syncs with my Garmin app and I can see some cool things like all my 5 mile runs ever...the average paces for my years of running, etc...if  you like stats you will probably like Smashrun. It is not even a sponsored thing, I just like it!

I have a few things like run or workout on Mondays...run the last day of the year... or the first day I get quirky about ...there are just certain rituals I feel set me up for success or are good luck charms, and I blew them all this year! LOL

Thanks for stopping by! I enjoy connecting with you all. Have a great week!

Ever had a nail come off?
Have a toenail turn black after running in the rain?
Want to join me on Athlinks!?
Heard of Smashrun?
Yaktrax users- Will Yaktrax keep me from busting my tush on the snow and ice?
How did your year start off? Anyone not freezing?!

  1. I don't think I have ever lost a toenail! I have had them get purpley, but they have stayed put so far. I have never heard of smashrun, but I also havent been able to get my Garmin to download to my computer for several years. clearly I need a new Garmin. Yaktrax do help, in my opinion, but I never liked running with them much, to me they felt a little funny until you get used to them.

    1. I guess my toe was beat up enough my nail couldn't hang lol
That is a bummer you can't sync your Garmin, I have found customer service to be pretty helpful if you decide to send them a service ticket! I usually just walk when it snows but if this weather keeps up I may need something to help me.

  2. I lost a toenail after my very first half marathon but never again. Right now, this marathon training has gifted me with two black toenails ...so I'm waiting and wondering if they will fall off. I like Athlinks as well. I just like seeing all of my races in one place!

You had a tough week of workouts girl ...that personal training thing will kick your booty, working muscles running just doesn't use!

    1. Hopefully you won't lose the nails, it feels weird! I couldn't not believe how long it took for them to come off! As big as I wear my shoes, I would have never thought it would happen.
      Training is kicking my butt!

  3. I'm checking out Smashrun right now. It looks really cool! You look so strong at the gym - making me wish I could do the stuff you are doing!!

    1. Smash run is a very cool concept!
I don't feel strong at the gym, there are some beasts there lol
I bet you could lots of the same :)

  4. I will join you on Athlinks! I have all my races listed there. I have lost toenails before, but no one needs to see that, right?

Yes, this weather is crazy and it needs to stop. Interestingly, we haven't had much snow and I haven't had to use the YakTrax. Which I am grateful for. See, it's the little things in life...

    1. Yay for Athlinks!
That is good you haven't had much snow. I am so over it!

  5. I get black toenails pretty often when i run in the heat and humidity. I asked my podiatrist about it and he really had no solutions. Eventually they grow out/fall off but it always happens to the same toe and it will never be the same. I don't think i have ever completely lost one though.

    1. I guess as your feet slip around that toe gets beat up. I have the same issue - it is always the same two toes that plague me for everything lol why can't our feet behave?!

  6. I haven't lost a toenail...yet. But they do look pretty nasty.

I have Yak Trax but they are only good on snow. We tend to have ice and slush.

I have an atlinks account. I rarely go to it.

    1. Runners are not notorious for pretty feet lol
The ice and slush sucks...took me down this morning.

  7. I have lost plenty of toe nails in the past 13 years, but (ironically) very few of them have been black. Most of mine go through the "thick white" phase before I finally just gently pry them off and give the new budding nail (usually already "sprouting") some fresh air. Graphic enough? ;-)

  8. Ooh the toe nail loss is never good! Mine took a whole year to grow back

  9. While I do love a snow day, I hate how long it takes for the sidewalks to be clear since people aren't very good at shoveling their walks. I have a toe nail that I wish would fall off but it's staying put!

    1. We don't have sidewalks most places here...and no plowing ever happens in neighborhoods, just main roads.
Maybe it will still come off

  10. I appreciate that you didn't include a lot of feet pics. :-D Sorry about the icy conditions. Definitely better to stay inside that out with the slipping and sliding cars! I'd be right with you on the stepping instead of jumping and still getting winded. lol

    1. Jumping is too hazardous for this old gal lol I may try on a low step eventually, but stepping is a good workout!

  11. That's cool you have a trainer to help you with some functional exercises. SEND ME GROSS FEET PICS. Girl you are the first blogger I have ever come across who posted a picture of a toenail that fell off. Love it! I love gross pics. I am so gross.

  12. I only lost a tonenail one time and it was after my PR marathon. I was in a Pilates mat class of all places when it came off so I tucked it under my mat until class was over. When it came time to roll up my mat, I forgot about the nail and ended up kicking it across the studio floor. Do you just let it fly? Retrieve it? Runner problems!

  13. I've lost several toe nails, a majority when I ran in college. It would totally gross my coach outπŸ˜‚ Btw I used to live in VA (fredericksburg) but moved to SC about 4 yrs ago. I actually miss the winters there since it's almost never winter here in Charleston ( we did get 7 inches of SNOW last week though 😱) keep it up with your workouts in the gym. a stronger runner is a faster runner!!πŸ™ŒπŸ’ͺ🏻

    1. Cool! I like the Fredericksburg area :) I bet it was strange to get snow in SC lol I enjoy the normal cold but the last few years here we keep getting snow dumped and I am not a fan. It is hazardous since they don't really salt or plow.
I do want too stay committed to muscle!! I was making good gains a few years ago and my shoulder started acting up and I had to let the heavy weight go. I feel like I am starting over

  14. I don't think you are losing your running fitness at all. You are staying active and getting cardio too. It's all good (as a coworker proclaims 100 times daily). I haven't lost a nail. But I'm sure there's a first time for everything. Maybe all of this frigid weather will bring an early spring. One can dream, right? Thanks for linking!

    1. I hope so, but I feel like i seriously have lacked doing the extra cardio like I should be.
I still can not believe that nail came off tow months later, hopefully you will never lose one.

  15. I have yet to lose a toenail??!! I've yet to collect that badge!!

I need to claim my results on Athlinks, I read the emails and then don't do it!!

Congrats on Bibrave, I'll be looking for your race discount codes!!

I hope you don't lose a nail, I think running in the rain did me in.

    1. I am stunned at how long it took the whole process to happen. Running in the rain will probably be what does it...it is hard when your feet get wet to keep them in place.
